Boy, 6, Recovering After Being Struck By Hit-And-Run Driver
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A six-year-old boy was in recovery on Thursday night after being seriously injured in a hit-and-run.
The incident occurred outside of the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center at Bethune Boulevard and Barnes Street in Spring Valley. Donovan had just left the center and was crossing Bethune Boulevard to meet his waiting mother when he was hit by a truck, CBS 2's Tamara Leitner reported.
The driver did not stop.
The boy was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla following the Monday night accident.
Community members have said that the stretch of road has been a problem for years and that recently installed signs have done little to fix the speeding problem.
"It should not take an incident like this to bring about change," Rev. Calherbe Monel said.
Rev. Monel said that residents have been fighting for speed bumps or a stop sign to slow drivers down.
"You have a lot of vehicles that just take this street as a runway. They come down as fast as they can and come up as fast as they can," Monel said.
CBS 2's cameras captured vehicles racing down the residential road that was filled with school children and pedestrians.
"The people that live around here they know the kids come here after school so even without stop signs they should know to take caution," Spring Valley resident, Valerie Blake said.
Investigators with the Spring Valley Police Department said that it remains unclear whether or not it was simply an accident.
"It was a straightaway and the conditions were dark. But, at any rate when you hit something you usually stop and see what you hit," Det. Sgt James Noble said.
Donovan's mother said that he is expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities said that the driver was in a white pick-up truck with blue writing on the side. The truck also appeared to have some sort of rack that held ladders.
