Boxer Robert Guerrero, Set To Fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., Arrested At JFK
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A top boxer facing what might be the biggest fight of his career was arrested with a pistol at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Port Authority police said.
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero was arrested after declaring an empty -- but unlicensed -- .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol while trying to fly to Las Vegas, Port Authority police said.
Prosecutors said in addition to the Smith and Wesson M&P .40 caliber handgun, the locked gun box also contained three unloaded 15-clip magazines. According to authorities, Guerrero told police he brought the gun with him from Virginia when he arrived in New York on Monday.
Guerrero was arraigned Thursday on charges including criminal possession of a firearm.
"I hope that Mr. Guerrero fights better than he thinks. For anyone who hasn't gotten the message, let me be crystal clear. You cannot bring an unlicensed weapon - loaded or unloaded - into this county or this city. And if you do you will be arrested and face felony charges," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement released Thursday afternoon.
The 30-year-old Guerrero is the former featherweight champion and current WBC welterweight champion.
A spokesman for Guerrero did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
He is scheduled to fight Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. for the WBC welterweight title at the MGM Grand in Vegas on May 4.
He was in town to promote the upcoming fight.
Guerrero is a six-time and four-division champion with a 31-1-1 career record (18 knockouts). The favored Mayweather is undefeated with 26 knockouts in 43 fights.
Guerrero was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court on May 14.
If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison.
