Box Of 28 Baby Chicks Found Outside Long Island Pet Store
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Someone left a box of 28 baby chicks outside a pet store on Long Island this week.
The chicks were discovered Friday afternoon outside Petland Discounts, at 174 Fulton Ave. in Hempstead.
They were being cared for at a veterinarian's office in Valley Stream. But employees at the vet's office say they don't know where the birds are headed next, Newsday reported.
A store employee said he found the flock in a taped-up cardboard box.
The chicks were taken to the vet's office later Friday. Employees there had to run out for chicken feed.
Veterinarian Jennifer Emmerich says the chicks will grow quickly and will need new homes.
The Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who dumped the chicks, the newspaper reported.
