Blue Angels Kick Off Memorial Day Weekend With Air Show
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The Blue Angels kicked off Memorial Day Weekend with a roaring air show at Jones Beach on Saturday.
Viewers told CBS 2's Dick Brennan that the show was an awe-inspiring display of the pilots' skill.
"To see them in such fly in such close formation, and you wonder how do they do it, its remarkable, " said Nancy Kerrigan
The Air Force's newest and most powerful fighter, the F-22 Raptor, was on display during the show, but pilot Sly Liggieri said that his team did not break the speed of sound.
"The shock wave that the airplane creates when it goes through the sound barrier would pretty much shatter every window around here, so we want to keep the repair bills down," he said.
Parks officials were pleased with the turnout for Saturday's event.
"It is an amazing turnout, everyone listened, got here early this morning, we are projecting 150 thousand to this air show," he said.
And those who attended said that it was well worth the trip.
"It was worth the traffic, it was worth the parking, inspirational, if I were 20 years younger, I'd say awesome," said Katherine Heaviside.
The air show will continue on Sunday.
