"There's some indication that the economy nationwide is doing better and certainly here in New York City," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Monday.

His honor served up a plateful of anecdotal evidence.

"I eat out every night in a different restaurant and I always ask the proprietor 'How's business' and you've gotten some pretty good grades over the last month, month and a half," said Bloomberg.

The mayor mentioned one eatery owner as telling him that he filed his third quarter sales tax and it was the highest he ever had in his restaurant.

Bloomberg also said high-end stores are doing better, but he adds people are "uncomfortable" and though the numbers are better than projected, they are not rushing out to spend.

The mayor added that we'll see if people were just shopping early as we approach Christmas.
