Bloomberg Honors First Living Service Member Awarded Medal Of Honor
NEW YORK (CBS 2) – Mayor Michael Bloomberg honored the first living service member to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.
Bloomberg presented Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta with a glass apple on Friday.
Giunta was a rifle team leader in Afghanistan in 2007 when his squad was ambushed by insurgents.
Giunta risked his life by chasing down two Taliban fighters while trying to rescue two American soldiers.
"Not a lot of people can make sacrifices, in some cases, supreme sacrifices to keep us free and to protect our rights, our bill of rights and be in charge of our own destiny," Bloomberg said.
Sgt. Giunta said he's not a hero and did simply what any of his fellow soldiers would have done.
