Billy Joel To Set Record For Performances At Madison Square Garden Next Summer
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Billy Joel will set a record for the most performances by any artist at Madison Square Garden when he plays his 65th show -- scheduled for this summer.
The 65-year-old piano man will surpass the record set by his former tour mate Elton John with a show on July 1, which will be part of his residency at the venue.
Tickets for the record-breaking show, as well as his performances scheduled in May and June, will go on sale to the general public on Saturday.
The Grammy-winning artist was announced last year as the first-ever music franchise of the Garden. In December, he announced plans to play one show a month at "The World's Most Famous Arena," as long as there is demand.
He has made good on that plan throughout the year.
Joel said last December that playing at The Garden "never gets old" and the residency means "more opportunities to connect with music fans and to provide a unique and memorable show every night that we play there."
The July 1 show will be the 19th performance as a part of the residency.
Joel played his first concert at Madison Square Garden in 1978.
In 2006, Joel sold out 12 consecutive concerts at the venue, earning him a banner that now hangs in the rafters next to other Garden legends.
