Belmar Mayor Heads South To Seek Lessons Learned After Katrina
BELMAR, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - The road to recovery from Sandy for the Jersey Shore borough of Belmar is going through the gulf coast, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"I've been speaking with the mayor of Pass Christian, Mississippi since Sandy hit Belmar," said Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty.
In fact, he's spending the day down in the beach town, which is also similar in size to Belmar.
"It's a great opportunity for me to not only see what they did but also get a good feel for it," Doherty told WCBS 880 reporter Peter Haskell. "See how they rebuilt. Talk with their small business owners and their residents and get a real on the ground feel for a town that was a similar size to us that was devastated by a hurricane seven years ago."
Doherty is picking up the tab for this trip himself.
"Why did you decide to do that?" asked Haskell.
"It just seemed like the right thing to do," Doherty said.
