The bear caught in a Greenwich neighborhood near I-95 was, at one point, tagged in New Jersey.
Greenwich Conservation Director Denise Savageau said she expected the state to report a young male captive, but it was an approximately 2-year-old female black bear weighing about 150 pounds.
Female black bears are known to wander over a much smaller territory than males.
"Did she get confused? It's always interesting what's the life cycle of bear and how they disperse out," Savageau said to Murnane.
She said this is something new.
"It's not common. That said, every time you say what is common behavior for wildlife, I find that wildlife doesn't like to be common all the time," she said. They often don't do what is predictable."
Savageau said this capture does not indicate a trend and there is not clear that black bears will be nesting there in large numbers this winter.
To make her way to Greenwich, the wandering bear may have found a handy pathway, perhaps the train tracks lined with backyards, stocked with bird feeders and trash cans, Murnane reported.
