Beach Bummer In Queens, Some Beaches Shut For Sand Replenishment
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Labor Day Weekend turned into a real beach bummer for some Queens residents.
Rockaway Beach was off limits between 110th Street and beach 130th Street as crews worked to replenish sand that was washed away by Sandy.
Residents called the project necessary but ill-timed.
"The week leading up to Labor Day is not the greatest time to start working on the beaches," Andy Kohlbrenner said.
Karen Taggart echoed Kohlbrenner's frustration.
"The beach was packed and populated on a busy Saturday and they had huge CAT bulldozers going up and down the beach. Someone could have gotten hurt," she said.
Beaches between beach 94th Street and beach 10th Street have been restored and were open.
