Bay Ridge Street Opens To Traffic Week After Giant Sinkhole Opened Up
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The sinkhole that opened up on a Brooklyn street last week has been fixed ahead of schedule.
Crews had been working nearly around-the-clock to repair the 20-foot crater that opened on 79th Street in Bay Ridge on Wednesday.
The Department of Environmental Protection blamed the massive hole on a ruptured, century-old sewer pipe.
The road is now open to traffic, but more work still needs to be done.
"We have the trench back to basically what we call 'temporary status' and we're working with National Grid now so they can get their work done before we do a final restoration," said James Roberts, of the DEP.
The DEP said it expects to have full repairs complete by the end of the week.
Annette Flood parked her car in the area just minutes before the ground beneath it simply sank away with her car in it.
"We narrowly missed being involved in something worse," she said last week.
The Fire Department and members of the DEP were able to rig a device to pull the car from the sinkhole's edge.
No one was injured when the street gave way.
