Bay Ridge, Brooklyn Tries To Solve Trash Problem By Getting Rid Of Trash Cans
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - The problem isn't unique to this neighborhood, says community board manager Josephine Beckman.
"People were dumping items like mattresses and tires, believe it or not, next to pails. So, the corners became very unsightly," she tells WCBS 880 reporter Alex Silverman.
But the way they're trying to solve it has become the talk of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
"It's not a solution. It's a disaster," says one man.
Those green, mesh trash cans seen on nearly every corner in the city aren't seen in this neighborhood anymore.
"Well, I would say the response has been mostly positive," says Beckman.
"[I've] been here over thirty years and this is the first time I see this corner clean," says one man.

But just a block down 4th Avenue, bags of trash, food wrappers, and cups are all piled up next to parking meter.
"There was a person walking by with a black bag full of garbage. They ran in my store, They throw it in a dumpster and they ran to the train station," says one store owner.
The month-long experiment ends today.
The Sanitation Department has yet to decide whether the pails are going back.
