Battle of the Bulge Survivors Holding Reunion At Middle School In Port Monmouth
PORT MONMOUTH , NJ (WCBS 880) – There will be a special reunion Thursday for survivors of a critical and ferocious World War II battle at a Jersey shore school named for one of that battle's heroes.
They are men in their 80s and 90s bound by their service and heroism. More than 80 survivors of the Battle of the Bulge will greet each other at the Thorne Middle School in Port Monmouth Thursday.

"The idea from the start was to reach out so they would have one last change for a hug and hello," said event organizer Edith Nowels. "It's the first time ever to have this many survivors of the battle together."
The school is named for Nowels' brother, Medal of Honor recipient Bud Thorne. He was 26-years-ol when he was killed during the battle.
"He was a hero," said Nowels. "We all looked up to him as being a big brother."
Nowels says these survivors are living monuments. The school is also unveiling a Battle of the Bulge monument that was moved from Fort Monmouth.
