Land Battle Brewing In South Salem Over Wolf Conservation Site
SOUTH SALEM, NY (WCBS 880) – At the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, a large Arctic gray wolf named Atka roams the woods completely unaware of the legal battle over his territory.
According to court papers, the Westchester Land Trust says the fencing to keep the wolves enclosed in protected woodlands, violates the terms of an easement agreement with the town.

"Extremely disappointing that two nonprofits would be on opposite sides of the coin when they both are dedicated to conservation," WCC executive director Deborah Heineman told WCBS 880's Catherine Cioffi.
Heineman says they want to do what's right for the wolves, for the program and for the people who visit the center.
"We've operated, I think, fabulously within this community for over ten years," said Heineman.
The Westchester Land Trust declined to comment on pending litigation.
The Wolf Conservation Center is a 501(c)3 organization with more than 20 resident wolves.
