'Back To The Future' Musical Coming To London, Could Hit Broadway
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Director Robert Zemeckis has launched a stage musical version of "Back to the Future" set to open in London next year, and it could later come to Broadway.
Producers said Thursday night that the sci-fi comedy franchise starring Michael J. Fox will open in London's West End in 2015, the 30th anniversary of the film.
A Broadway run is a possibility if the new musical flies – as well as the film's specially equipped DeLorean.
In the 1985 film, Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly character becomes a human guinea pig who travels back to his fictional hometown of Hill Valley, Calif., in 1955. He uses a time machine fashioned from a DeLorean by mad scientist Emmett "Doc" Brown – played by Christopher Lloyd.
Once there, McFly gets caught up in the soap opera lives of his own teenage parents, including his mom – played by Lea Thompson – who develops a crush on her future son.
In "Back to the Future Part II," released in 1989, McFly and Brown go 30 years in the future to visit Hill Valley in 2015.
Thus, if the "Back to the Future" universe is to mirror reality, spectators may arrive at the musical premiere in London next year in flying cars or on hoverboards, fruit dispensers may be available in your kitchen, and the Chicago Cubs may be celebrating a World Series victory.
