Officials: Boy, 2, Falls Down Elevator Shaft At Catering Hall In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A toddler was hospitalized Thursday evening after falling down an elevator shaft during a wedding rehearsal in the Bronx, officials said.
As CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported, the 2-year-old boy plunged 20 feet down a gap in the elevator shaft at the Villa Barone Manor catering hall, located off the Throggs Neck Expressway, at around 7:21 p.m.
Late Thursday, the catering hall locked its doors, and no one inside would talk about what happened. But the boy's father was furious.
"It shouldn't have happened," said Michael Edwards of the Bronx. "You know, you come out, you're taking the train, how you've got the gap and somebody fell – how are you going to feel? It shouldn't have happened."
Edwards, of the Bronx, said his son, Isaiah, is supposed to be the ring bearer at a family wedding on Saturday. But instead of practicing for the big event, the boy wound up in the hospital with what amazingly looked like minor injuries.
"They check him out really, really good to make sure everything is right before, you know, they're going to release him from the hospital -- check him, do X-ray, ultrasound, everything," Michael Edwards said.
The family and workers at the catering hall used a ladder to rescue little Isaiah. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, but he was expected to recover -- and his dad said the boy should be able to carry the rings at the wedding on Saturday.
