1 Dead After Small Plane Crashes In Long Island Sound
MATTITUCK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The pilot of a small plane has died after the aircraft went down Monday morning in the Long Island Sound, authorities said.
It happened just before 9 a.m.
The Coast Guard said it received a report from another aircraft in the area of a small, white plane in the water about eight miles off Mattituck Inlet.
Rescue crews from the Coast Guard as well as Suffolk County police, Riverhead police, Southhold police and other agencies responded to the scene.
The Coast Guard said Mattituck fire department divers later found the pilot's body inside the plane.
There were also reports of someone escaping via parachute, but authorities said no other passengers were on board.
"It was just a single passenger plane, so he was the only one on the aircraft," Coast Guard spokesperson Alissa FLockerzi said.
The FAA identified the plane as a fixed wing, single-engine Raven. The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating.
The pilot's identification has not yet been released.
