Authorities: Goose Euthanized After Being Beaten In New Rochelle
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Authorities say a Canada goose had to be euthanized after it suffered a severe beating in Westchester County.
The attack last Friday shattered the goose's right leg. The animal was put down on Saturday.
According to the Journal News, wildlife expert Kate Murphy, who was involved in the rescue, said a witness saw a man repeatedly strike the bird with a pitchfork in New Rochelle.
Murphy said it makes her "sick.''
A number of suburban areas have struggled to humanely control geese because of health and property damage issues.
The birds are protected by both state and federal regulations.
DEC spokeswoman Wendy Rosenbach says an attack on a goose, if proved, would be considered harassment. The violation carries a fine of up to $250.
