Attorney General Schneiderman Argues Against Gun Reciprocity Bill
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is urging U.S. Senate leaders to reject pending legislation that would establish handgun reciprocity among states.
Schneiderman says the bill would force states like New York with tougher handgun restrictions to allow visitors to carry their weapons obtained in other states with weaker laws.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Schneiderman says reciprocity would increase the risk of violence against New Yorkers and make it harder for police to crack down on illegal guns.
He says 92 percent of traced guns recovered from 2009 crimes in New York City, which has strict limits on handgun licensing, came from other states.
