Police: Suspect Hit Officers, Slams Into Car After Chase In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police Tuesday afternoon said a driver struck two officers in Brooklyn, and then led police on a chase that ended in a crash which left two women injured.
A driver was taken into custody.
As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, sources said officers stopped a van at Flatlands Avenue and East 42nd Street in Flatlands, Brooklyn. Officers approached the vehicle, and one officer was struck and clipped, while another had his foot run over, police sources said.
Neither was seriously injured, sources said.
Police pursued the driver in the van for several miles, but the chase was called off. The driver ended up crashing into a civilian vehicle at Avenue U and Stuart Street in Marine Park, Brooklyn, police said.
Three women were in the small gray car – all from the same family, source said. They were pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated, according to the FDNY.
Police said two of them were taken to Kings County Hospital Center, and one of them – a 19-year-old who had been a front-seat passenger – was in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle -- the mother of the 19-year-old -- was also hospitalized, while the back seat passenger was not injured, police said.
Witnesses told CBS2 the crash tore through their quiet neighborhood.
"They were going real fast – at least around 60 miles an hour – and then the car is coming from Kings Plaza… the white van crashed into it pretty bad, and I understand there's some people that are pretty banged up," said witness Jack Vanasco.
The white van that hit the vehicle has New Jersey license plates, and was reported to be a street-hail dollar van. Police had identified the vehicle in connection with a robbery pattern, sources said.
Charges against the offending driver were pending late Tuesday afternoon.
