HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 5-year-old boy was killed Tuesday night, and at least eight other people were injured, when a commuter bus plowed into a Nassau County home.
The Nassau Inter-County Express bus first struck a pedestrian, then slammed into the house at around 9:30 p.m. near Nassau Place and Fulton Street in Hempstead, authorities said.
The 5-year-old was taken to Winthrop University Medical Center in Mineola, where he was pronounced dead, Hempstead police confirmed to CBS 2 and 1010 WINS.
The boy was inside the house in a front room, police said.
A landlord told CBS 2's Lou Young the child was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest as he was taken from the scene. Paramedics were giving the child CPR.
Hempstead police told 1010 WINS the bus, which is operated by Veolia Transportation, first hit a pedestrian and then slammed into the multi-family house. The other victims, including the pedestrian and some people on the bus, were taken to Nassau University Medical Center and Winthrop University Medical Center.
The bus company said at least one witness reported that the bus swerved to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road, and the driver lost control.
It was not known Tuesday night whether the bus driver would be charged or ticketed.
