ASPCA To Shut Post-Sandy Emergency Pet Boarding Facility In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The ASPCA is getting ready to close its post-Hurricane Sandy emergency pet boarding facility in Brooklyn.
Some 280 animals have been cared for at the facility since the storm hit. About half of them, though, remain at the shelter, waiting to be claimed.

"We are still caring for the displaced pets at our emergency boarding facility, but we're also planning the next step, which is to find homes for unclaimed animals as we start to demobilize our operation," said Tim Rickey, senior director of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response."
"While many pets have been reunited with their families, we still have animals that are waiting to be claimed, and we want to give residents every opportunity to be reunited with their pets. We urge anyone who is missing their pet to visit our emergency shelter as soon as possible or contact the Hurricane Sandy pet hotline."
The ASPCA'S Joel Lopez said the owners of the pets should come forward to be reunited with their boarded dogs and cats.
"So what we're doing now is we're asking owners to stay in touch with us. And for those owners who do have struggles, if they are engaged with working with us, we're engaged with them finding out what their challenges and helping them to solve those," Lopez told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.
There are about 130 dogs and cats still in the temporary shelter.
Lopez said they know some of the owners' names and phone numbers. But some of the cats and dogs were brought to the shelter after being found in the streets.
"And what we've done with those animals is check for microchips. We've posted them on lost and found websites," Lopez told Hall.
The facility is located at 1508 Herkimer Street. The facility is open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., seven days a week.
