10-Year-Old Boy Killed, Mother Wounded In Asbury Park Shooting; Suspect Accomplice Arrested
ASBURY PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 10-year-old boy was killed and his 39-year-old mother was wounded in a shooting in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested and in connection with the shooting late Thursday, authorities said.
Detectives and crime scene investigators scoured a home on Ridge Avenue Thursday where the boy was shot to death and his mother was hit in the leg Wednesday night.
"We heard four shots and I grabbed my kids and told them to get down," said neighbor Nicole Johnson, who lives across the street with her two girls.
The shots pierced the window of the multi-family home just before 11 p.m. Evidence markers tagging bullet casings on the street may indicate that the shooter was aiming towards the first floor apartment, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.
The child was immediately aided by paramedics. In police scanner audio from Broadcastify.com, medics can be heard trying to save the boy.
"Transporting Jersey shore medics on board. Notify trauma, 10-year-old gunshot victim unresponsive. CPR in progress."
Both the mother and the boy were rushed to Jersey Shore Medical Center, but the boy did not survive.
"I saw the little boy walking all the time with his mom," said neighbor Jessica Perez. "It's so sad."
"Why did he have to die? He was having a lot of fun yesterday," said another neighbor, who did not want to be identified.
The incident has left some neighbors on edge.
"Scared. We're afraid. We don't think about that kind of thing happening," Johnson said. "To think about your child dying is scary."
"It's just sad. I have two teenagers," another neighbor told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman. "I'm shocked. I couldn't even go to sleep last night."
Neighbors say they've seen cops called to the home frequently, Doris reported.
The teenage boy was arrested at Neptune High School in connection with the shooting. The school was placed on lockdown following the arrest per protocol, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's office.
The boy was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was believed to be an accomplice in the shooting.
Investigators late Thursday were trying to identify others who might have been involved in the shooting. Anyone with information was asked to call Detective Brian Weisbrot of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office at (800) 533-7443 or Detective Sean DeShader of the Asbury Park Police Department at (732) 774-1300.
It was not clear late Thursday what led to the shooting.
