As Gas Prices And Tolls Rise, Carpooling Gains In Popularity In New Jersey

PARAMUS, NJ (CBSNewYork) - Carpooling is nothing new, but it seems to be catching on again with gas prices in the $4 range and tolls ever on the rise.

The Record poked around and found the cost conscious are getting cozy, piling in, and pocketing the savings.

For instance, four buddies who work at Merck in the Kenilworth area split $430 in monthly commuting expenses.

Barry Noonan did the driving this morning from Paramus.

"I live in Montvale. So for me, it would be four tolls all the way down, and that's $120 a month just in that," he told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams.

There are websites that help travel companions link up. They include erideshare.com and a service from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Carpooling is not for everyone, however. There is a loss of personal space and everyone else's needs have to be considered.

On his ride this morning, David Crowley said everyone seemed to agree on the radio station.

"880," he said.
