Arrivederci, NYC! Mayor Bill De Blasio And Family To Vacation In Italy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Arrivederci, New York. Buongiorno, Italy.
New York's first family is getting set to take a family vacation.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, first lady Chirlane McCray, Chiara and Dante will be packing up to pay a visit to the towns the mayor's grandparents lived. They'll also be visiting Rome, Naples, Capri and Venice.
They'll be gone from July 18-27.
"On election night, we watched in awe as the town of Sant'Agata live-streamed Bill's victory in a small movie theater. We saw Italians—people who had never even met us—erupt in cheers when Bill won the final vote," McCray wrote on her blog. "Returning to Italy this summer will be a homecoming for our family. It will be a moment to humbly express our gratitude to the family members and local residents who supported us and cheered us on over those long months. And, as our first family trip together since we went to Niagara Falls in 2012, it will be a moment to enjoy some much-needed time with Chiara and Dante," wrote McCray.
It won't be all relaxation: The Mayor's office says de Blasio will be meeting with top Italian mayors and officials.
First Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris will oversee day-to-day government functions while the mayor is away. De Blasio will be making daily check-in calls with his cabinet while away.
It's the longest vacation a sitting mayor will have taken in recent history. Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn't take a full week off during his three terms.
