Arrests Made In Fatal Shooting Of Basketball Star Tayshana Murphy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Arrests have made in the killing of a New York City high school basketball star.

Tyshawn Brockington, 21, and Robert Cartagena, 20, were captured in South Carolina on Wednesday. They are accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old Tayshana Murphy earlier this month.

DCPI confirms that both men were arrested by South Carolina's regional fugitive task force. They are awaiting extradition to New York.

The senior at Murry Bergtraum was shot in the head in the Grant Houses in Morningside Heights.

Murphy, known as "chicken" at home and on the court, was also considered one of the top girls basketball players in the city and was ranked as the 16th best point guard in the nation for her class by ESPN.

"She was very much liked by the other players on the team and the other students in the school and she was very much respected. She was a leader," said her coach Ed Grezinsky after. "Very senseless because she had everything to live for. She was a great kid."

Investigators already had arrested a third man, 24-year-old Terique Collins, in the case for criminal possession of a weapon.
