Detectives learned that Gillon was living about a block away at the time, WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported.
Gillon's arrest came after the Union County Homicide Task Force had DNA evidence examined, prosecutors said.
"This case is a good example of the value of perseverance in investigating crimes that initially go unsolved," stated acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park. "The public should know that we are committed to continuing to examine cold cases in an effort to bring crime victims and their families justice."
Gillon is held on $1 million bail.
