Architecture Firm Says They Didn't Mean To Create Towers That Look Like WTC On 9/11
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The design for two new highrises in South Korea has sparked controversy and outrage here at home because it resembles the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.
The buildings, designed by the Netherlands-based architecture firm MVRDV, are connected in the middle by what they call "a pixelated cloud" that many believe look like the Twin Towers exploding when the two planes hit on 9/11.
"It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt, it was not our intention," MVRDV said on its website.
According to firm's Facebook page, they've received "threatening emails and calls of angry people calling us Al Qaeda lovers or worse."
MVRDV says the highrises were designed this way "based on parameters such as sunlight, outside spaces, living quality for inhabitants and the city."
They say it wasn't their intention to create buildings resembling the attacks and insist they didn't see the resemblance during the design process.
Nevertheless, there was no indication on their website or Facebook page that the firm would be redesigning the luxury buildings.
