Marshall was a decorated World War II veteran who later became a diplomat and Broadway producer.
But his aristocratic life unraveled as he was accused of exploiting Astor's failing mind to help himself to millions of her estimated $200 million.
He claimed he had the legal power to give himself gifts with her money. But a jury convicted him in October 2009 of altering her will in order to steal her fortune, including millions of dollars Astor intended to leave to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
His high-profile, high-society trial brought the likes of Barbara Walters and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to the witness stand, testifying as friends of Astor, who died in 2007 at the age of 105.
There was a parade of rich and powerful people who testified they saw her mind slipping away as her son stripped her Park Avenue apartment of valuables.
Marshall was sentenced to one to three years in prison. But he was granted medical parole in August 2013, after two months in prison.
