Another L.I. Homeowner Blames Airplane Lavatory Waste For Gaping Hole In Garage Roof
VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- It's certainly not the first time it has happened, a story that CBS 2 first told you about earlier this month.
Homeowners on Long Island have previously blamed waste from airplanes for huge holes in their roofs. Now, it appears it has happened to another person.
Norman Weissman recently came home from vacation to a two-foot gaping hole in the roof of his garage on South Corona Avenue.
"I was shocked. I was worried it could hit me or some child nearby," Weissman told CBS 2's Vanessa Murdock on Wednesday.
Something smashed through the homeowner's roof and busted three shelves on its way down.
"It didn't hit anything too valuable, but it was very disturbing," Weissman said.
At first, he wasn't sure what caused the destruction. Then, he learned two other houses less than two miles away had holes blown in their roofs, too.
Two weeks ago, Lois Farella told CBS 2 she woke up to a "very loud bang." Whatever caused it, left a hole in the homeowner's roof big enough to fit a basketball.
And next door, Ann Grace said her roof was also torn apart around the same time.
They both blamed blue ice for smashing shingles and shredding insulation. Blue ice is frozen sewage falling from a damaged airplane lavatory.
Weissman is convinced his roof was hit by it, too. He said planes constantly fly overhead.
"I can read the tail markings even they're so low," he said.
Weissman called the FAA and it investigated, examining flight paths and searching for signs of the blue goo near the hole.
The FAA claims there is no evidence linking the gaping hole in Weissman's home to blue ice falling from an airplane. It also said the evidence is "inconclusive" as to whether or not the houses of the other individuals were hit by blue ice.
All the homeowners said they are hoping their insurance will cover costs to repair the damage.
