Anonymous Donor Provides Baseballs For Underprivileged Athletes
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Underprivileged baseball players in Upper Manhattan recently received a gift from a very thoughtful donor.
The donor, who asked to remain anonymous, told CBS 2's John Slattery that he was happy to help the community.
"I think I can relate to them as a child not having a lot of things, and people were helpful to me growing up. I'll never forget them," he said.
The former Marine and now retired police officer wanted to help less fortunate people get a helping hand.
"He's sharing what he has. Sharing with everybody. sharing is caring," said Hugo Lantigua.
The donor regularly searches the grass around baseball fields in Nassau County where more well-off players leave behind balls that they don't want to retrieve.
He collects them by the dozen and drives them to Highbridge Field in Washington Heights, where he grew up.
Recently he dropped off a load of 125-gently used baseballs.
