Animal Lovers Meet For 'Strut Your Mutt' Walkathon And Festival
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Hundreds of animal lovers and their pets gathered at Manhattan's Pier 84 Sunday for Best Friend Animal Society's "Strut Your Mutt," a walkathon and festival to benefit the Utah-based animal sanctuary as well as a number of local rescue groups.
"Our mission is to bring about a time when there are no more homeless pets in the entire country," Best Friends CEO Gregory Castle told 1010WINS' Susan Richard. "Obviously we can't be everywhere, but we can have volunteers everywhere."
Castle said Best Friends is specifically committed to supporting rescuers in the New York area, and notes that the larger mission cannot be accomplished without the hundreds of smaller, grassroots organizations.
Participating rescue groups at Strut Your Mutt included Friends of Animal Rescue, City Critters, Ready for Rescue, Long Island Bulldog Rescue and the Pet Adoption League of New York.
The event was emceed by Todd Newton, host of "Family Game Night" and featured appearances by "It's Me Or The Dog's" Victoria Stilwell, Rachelle Lefevre of CBS's "A Gifted Man" and several dogs from the Disney movie "Spooky Buddies."
