An alligator was found crawling on the front lawn of a home on Moriches Drive in Mastic Beach Friday morning.
The homeowner managed to capture the 2 1/2-foot critter in a plastic bin. It weighed about three or four pounds, police said.
Police arrived and taped the gator's mouth shut to avoid injury.
The alligator was taken to a nearby pet shop and will be moved to Jungle Bob's in Centereach.
The gator appears to be in good health, authorities said.
The pet shop owner said it was likely discarded by someone who feared it would grow larger and become dangerous.
