Tailgating Allowed, Alcohol Banned At Upcoming NJ High School Championship Games
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Fans at some of this weekend's New Jersey high school football games will be allowed to tailgate, but they'll have to leave the alcohol at home.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, the High School Athletic Association initially said that there would be no tailgating allowed at championship football games this weekend.
Now tailgating is okay, but alcohol is prohibited.
Michael Cherenson, spokesman for the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association, says that the goal of its championships is about honoring and celebrating the success of student athletes and not about partying.
He says the NJSIAA wants its member schools to tell students and parents not to tailgate at all.
Paramus Catholic Vice Principal Scott Langan doesn't understand why some choose to act recklessly at these events.
"I don't think people need to show up at 4:30 in the afternoon and set up a table and set up a grill and be drinking out of red plastic cups," he said.
Paramus Catholic plays St. Peter's Prep at MetLife Stadium Friday night.
