Heads Up! Air Force Jets Zoom Over Big Apple
NEW YORK (CBS 2 / WCBS 880/1010 WINS) -- Don't be surprised if you spot some low-flying aircraft over Manhattan -- it's just one of the events being held in celebration of Air Force Week in New York City.
To mark the start of the special military tribute, F-16's from the Thunderbird Squadron flew by the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum Tuesday and will do so again on Wednesday starting at about 10:30 a.m.
Along with the Hudson River flyovers, the city is holding events which include Air Force Nights with the Brooklyn Cyclones, New York Mets, Staten Island Yankees and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Coney Island.
1010 WINS report Juliet Papa spoke to some Air Force Hometown Heroes from NYC.
Staff Sgt. Mercedes Crossland grew up in Harlem and was recently honored for her service photographing the detonating of explosives in Iraq.
She admits that she feared for her life.
"Every day. It was a challenge," she said. "But I worked with a great group of people, amazing people," she said.
Chief Master Sgt. Jeremiah Simon, Jr. won a bronze star in Iraq. Born in Harlem and raised in Brooklyn, this local patriot now runs basic training and said he greatly enjoyed his time in the Middle East.
"I've traveled around this world twice and have great experiences with friends all over," he said. "I think I would do it all over again."
