Petty Officer Anthony Kozak said Crowe, 48, and a friend were kayaking when they lost their way. The pair flagged down the officers who were on patrol around 10 p.m.
"The station boat took them on board and took them back into Huntington Bay. When they got them onboard and started talking to them is when they had realized it was him," Kozak told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.
Crowe and his friend launched from Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday but lost their way as it got dark and surf conditions worsened.
The pair were wearing life jackets. The Coast Guard said boat rescues like this are common.
"The crew onboard the boat was saying that he was a really nice guy," Kozak said.
Crowe took photos with the officers and tweeted "thanks to Seth and the boys from the US Coast Guard for guiding the way."
Crowe is filming the biblical movie Noah on Long Island.
