Accident Shuts Down Tube Of Outbound Lincoln Tunnel, Causes Major Delays
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Delays estimated at 90 minutes were reported in the outbound Lincoln Tunnel Wednesday evening, following a multi-vehicle accident.
The three-car accident happened Wednesday evening in the outbound north tube of the tunnel. Injuries were reported in the crash.
The outbound north tube was closed for a period of time after the crash, while the center and south tubes remained open. By 6:20 p.m., the north tube had reopened.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey shut down the tube so ambulances could get to the accident scene easily.
Delays of 90 minutes were reported as of just before 6 p.m., and traffic was literally at a complete standstill, CBS 2's Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2 HD.
Commute times for the alternate route of the Holland Tunnel were estimated at an hour.
The shutdown also affected NJ TRANSIT buses, which were likewise at a standstill at the height of the evening rush.
