Aaron Hernandez Jerseys Selling For Big Bucks On eBay
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NFL has pulled all Aaron Hernandez merchandise from its online store.
The New England Patriots have announced a free exchange for fans looking to get rid of their Hernandez jerseys.
But on eBay, some are paying big bucks for jerseys stitched with Hernandez's No. 81 after the tight end was arrested last week and charged with the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.
One fan told the Boston Globe that he thought he "might get $15" for his jersey -- and ended up bringing in $289.
Another Patriots fan was baffled about the surging market for Hernandez apparel: "I can't think of any reason why people would want it."
The fan, Lynn L'Heureux, had a jersey going for almost $130, according to the Globe.
"They might think it will go up in value later on, and maybe it will, but I'm not interested," L'Heureux said. "I just don't want it in my possession. I want to use the money to buy a jersey that reflects my pride in the Patriots."
A simple search on eBay pulled up a number of active auctions Monday.
One red jersey was up to $227.50 after 37 bids. Two jerseys signed by Hernandez also topped the $200 mark.
"I would actually pay money to know the story of who is buying it and why," a seller told the Globe.
Hernandez was released by the Patriots shortly after his arrest. He pleaded not guilty to murder and five gun-related charges and is being held without bail in Massachusetts.
