'A' Train To Shut Down North Of 168th Street Overnight This Week
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents of Washington Heights and Inwood will be stuck with the No. 1 train during the overnight hours this week, as the northernmost leg of the A train shuts down for Fastrack repairs.
Beginning Monday night and continuing through Friday morning, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day, the A train will not run between the 207th Street terminal and 168th Street, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
C train service will also end early each night.
The MTA has advised affected straphangers to use the No. 1 train, which runs just a few blocks east of the A train in the area, as an alternative. The MTA also suggested using the M4 bus.
Free shuttle buses will also operate between the Dyckman Street stations on the A and No. 1 train lines, although the two stations are within walking distance. The Bx12 bus can also be used between the 207th Street A and No. 1 train stops, the agency said.
The Fastrack maintenance program shuts down train service over a section of a subway line, so workers can have uninterrupted access to all of the infrastructure and equipment inside.
Crews will inspect signals and switches, fix and replace track sand ties, work on elevators and escalators, repair water damage, clear drains, and clean stations, the MTA said.
The MTA has said the Fastrack system allows crews to work more efficiently, to the point where it saved $16.7 million in 2012.
