A-Rod Set To Test Hand In Minors; Yankees Still Waiting On Pettitte
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Injured Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is set to play in the minor leagues Friday night.
The 37-year-old star has been out for more than a month because of a broken left hand. He is scheduled to play for Class A Tampa at Lakeland in the Florida State League.
"We'll see how he does and start working through it and then make a determination," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said, according to the New York Daily News. "We've definitely missed Alex's righthanded bat, but we need everyone to get going to turn this back around."
Rodriguez is hitting .276 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs for the Yankees.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are still waiting for the doctors' go-ahead to have Andy Pettitte pitch off a mound.
The veteran left-hander has been out since suffering a fractured left ankle in June, and time is starting to get tight for his targeted September return.
"I don't have any updates on Andy," said Cashman. "He's fine, and there have been no setbacks, but I don't have anything new on him until the doctors say otherwise."
