91 Puppies Saved From West Coast, Put Up For Adoption On Long Island
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- If you are looking for a new puppy, dozens had just arrived on Long Island Monday from the West Coast.
As TV 10/55 Long Island Bureau Chief Richard Rose reported, the puppies were all eager to head to a loving home.
The 91 puppies were awaiting adoption at the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, Nassau County. They were facing being euthanized when they were flown into the no-kill shelter this weekend after being rescued from municipal pounds in California.
"They were in overcrowded shelters," said Christina Travalja of North Shore Animal League America. "California is, unfortunately, very overcrowded with smaller-breed dogs."
Finding the space for the dozens of pups who needed to be put up for adoption was a first order of business. Omar Pena of North Babylon was excited and ready to bring one home for his three young boys.
"We just purchased our first home a year ago," Pena said. "So now, we have our own yard and stuff, so a puppy has a lot of space to run around.
"It's fun, basically, to have a friend that will be happy when you get home to see you, and play with you, and roll around, and just have a good time," said Ronnie Dimidok of Maspeth, Queens. "It's just nice."
On Monday afternoon, the little pups were all getting their necessary shots, and a thorough professional grooming.
"Just a happy dog," said groomer Katherine Zel. "You know, once they get groomed up, their personality opens up. They're miserable when, you know, they're all matted and dirty."
Shelter managers said adopting one of the lovable pups brings an added bonus.
"I always tell everyone, you know, if they adopt one pet, they're actually saving the life not only of that one, but of another, because once they adopt a pet from us, it opens up a space to take another," Travalja said.
The puppies will go up for adoption on Friday morning, with fees ranging from $75 to $225. The only requirements is that a loving home is provided.
