9 Busted In Premium Heroin Dealing Ring In Riverhead, LI

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Nine men have been indicted for selling premium heroin on the East End of Long Island, the Suffolk County District Attorney announced.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, one of the defendants is a career drug dealer who's 75 years old.

The heroin glassines allegedly sold by the members of the drug ring were stamped with the word Hollywood, authorities said. The high-grade heroin was sold in Riverhead, Suffolk County DA Tom Spota said.

"And they peddled their poison all along the Route 58 corridor in the parking lots of the Tanger mall, Walmart, gas stations, Home Depot and the Department of Motor Vehicles parking lot," he said.

Spota said the heroin, sold for $20 a bag, was very potent.

"There were at least six overdoses that we know of. None of them were fatal. However, one of them occurred to an individual, a young woman. She overdosed twice and she told the undercover officers that she just wasn't aware of the high quality of this type of heroin," he said.

The DA said the heroin was brought in from East Harlem and sold to young people, many who live in the Hamptons.
