86-Year-Old Man Mugged, Thrown To The Ground On Upper East Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - An 86-year-old man was thrown to the ground during a mugging on the Upper East Side early Friday morning, police said.

The victim and his 56-year-old wife were walking at 76th and Fifth Avenue at around 12:30 a.m. when they passed a group of four males, police said.

One of the suspects asked if the victim if he had a dollar, and he replied no. That's when the victim was grabbed by the collar and thrown to the ground.

The victim's wallet was stolen and the group took off.

The Upper East Side is seen as a safe-haven for walkers like Carole Goldfeld and her puppy Goldie, but even she knows you have to be careful.

"I never walk in the park after dark. I mean I've lived in NYC for a long time and I remember when people didn't walk in the park in the daytime, so I never go at night," she told CBS2's Jessica Moore.

Others say the couple was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"They should've been walking on this side of Fifth Avenue. I wouldn't be walking on this side of the park," Danny Landes, a doorman of 21 years, said.

Police said the 86-year-old man suffered some abrasions to his face when he was thrown down, but refused to get medical treatment. Investigators continue to hunt for the man responsible.
