Although there are wrong way signs posted at the on-ramp, the driver entered, went into the center lane and smashed into a Ford Edge, Rincon reported. Sources said that the driver narrowly missed a first car in his path before the crash.
The 84-year-old driver was killed. A passenger in his vehicle, an 82-year old female, and the driver of the Edge, a 55-year-old male, were taken to Jamaica Hospital and are both listed in stable condition.
Traffic was snarled for hours and remains slow between Rockaway Boulevard and Erksine Street.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
