80-Year-Old Woman Killed In Hit-And-Run In Hempstead
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An 80-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a street in Hempstead, police said.
The woman was struck just before 9 p.m. Tuesday at Washington Street at Nichols Court. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m.
"The kids, there were people walking by, they screamed saying 'Oh my God,'" said neighbor Marvin Espinal.
"It's heartbreaking that you would actually do that, to hit an 80-year-old lady and keep going - hit anyone and keep going," said Charlie Hughes, another neighbor who came home find police blocking off the scene just a few hundred feet from a police station.
The identity of the victim has not been released, nor have police said if the woman was in the crosswalk at the time of the crash.
Police say they recovered the vehicle that struck parked elsewhere in Hempstead and impounded it for a forensic investigation.
