Boy Reported Dead, 13 Injured After Hempstead Fire
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An 8-year-old boy was reportedly killed, and more than a dozen were injured, after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Nassau County early Saturday.
The fire started around 6:20 a.m. Saturday at the building at 917 St. Pauls Rd. North in Hempstead. The blaze spread to several nearby buildings.
The fire left an 8-year-old boy dead, according to a Newsday report.
Thirteen others were injured, including a 40-year-old woman who was reported in critical condition, another woman who suffered a heart attack, a pregnant woman, and two children who were thrown from a third-story window, the newspaper reported.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano told CBS 2 Saturday morning that the fire prompted a response from 13 different fire departments. It came while snow was still falling from the blizzard overnight, leaving roads treacherous on much of Long Island.
The American Red Cross said it was helping about 70 people who have been displaced by the fire.
Another 8-year-old boy was also killed early Saturday in a fire in Brooklyn.
