74-Foot Tree Cut Down, Ready For Rockefeller Center

Crowds cheered Thursday as sawdust flew and a crane gingerly lifted the 74-foot foot, 12-ton Norway spruce -- that will be the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree -- onto a 115-foot-long trailer.
New York City firefighter Peter Acton, of Mahopac, studied forestry and he said his tree is a perfect specimen -- full all the way around.
"We had a hammock there until just two weeks ago," Acton said. "We all hung out as a family and it's bittersweet, but we're really happy that it could help the people in New York."
Acton's 7-year-old daughter, Fiona, and 11-year-old son, Seamus, would play tag under the tree and collect pine cones.
"I'm happy and sad," Seamus said. "I'm going to miss the tree, seeing the snow on the branches, and it's for a good cause because it's gonna go for a house."
The tree will be brought into Manhattan by a flatbed truck and erected at Rockefeller Center on Friday.
