7-Year-Old Fatally Struck By MTA Vehicle In East Harlem
NEW YORK (1010WINS) -- A 7-year-old boy is dead after he was struck by an MTA Bridges and Tunnels vehicle while crossing a street with his pregnant mother in East Harlem Friday morning, police said.
The incident happened shortly after 9 a.m. at Second Avenue and East 124th Street.
Police say it was not a hit-and-run.
The tow truck, operated by MTA Bridge and Tunnels, was on its way to the entrance of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge.
The mother is in stable condition at Harlem Hospital.
The 39-year-old driver was tested for alcohol at the scene, and it was negative, the MTA said in a statement. He has been employed at Bridges and Tunnels since 2007.
The driver was responsible for removing disabled vehicles from the RFK Bridge. The MTA said the driver had just received a call to assist a disabled vehicle when the accident occurred.
The NYPD has said they do not believe criminal charges will be filed.
