Police: 60-Year-Old Woman Raped In Boiler Room Of Brooklyn Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A man dressed like a maintenance worker raped a 60-year-old woman in Brooklyn Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place at around 6 a.m. on Berriman Street between New Lots and Hegeman avenues in East New York.

Sources said a woman was collecting cans and wandered into the unlocked basement when she was attacked, CBS2's Alice Gainer reported. Police said the man then grabbed her from behind, covered her mouth, and dragged her into the dark boiler room where he repeatedly punched her in the face and raped her.

He fled the scene following the incident, authorities said.

The victim left and went home where her niece called 911. Residents of the building didn't seem to know much about it, but reaction varied.

"I couldn't even be shocked," one resident said.

"There are certain things I don't want to say on camera because I don't want to get hurt. This neighborhood is kinda crazy," another said.

The victim said the man was wearing dark clothing similar to that of a maintenance worker.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
