6 Fallen Officers Added To Police Memorial Wall
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The city honored its fallen heroes this week in a moment of solemn remembrance in Battery Park.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, the city added six officers' names to the Police Memorial Wall on Friday. One of the officers succumbed to injuries in an on-duty vehicle accident, while the other five lost their lives to illnesses contracted during rescue and recovery efforts after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
6 Fallen Officers Added To Police Memorial Wall
The officers honored included:
• Capt. Dennis Morales, who joined the NYPD in January 1992, retired in 2010, and died on July 27, 2012 at the age of 50;
• Lt. Christopher Pupo, who joined the NYPD in August 1998, and died on June 23, 2012 at the age of 50;
• Sgt. Garrett Danza, who joined the NYPD in January 1983, retired in 2003, and died on July 11, 2012, at the age of 58;
• Detective Alick Herrmann, who joined the NYPD in January 1986, retired in 2006, and died on Dec. 23, 2011 at the age of 49;
• Detective Fermin Archer, who joined the New York City Transit Police Department in July 1985, and died from injuries he suffered in a vehicle accident at the age of 48;
• Officer Denis McLarney, who joined the NYPD in 1996, retired at the end of 2009, and died March 1, 2012, at the age of 49.
"The Police Memorial Wall bears the names of nearly 800 members of New York's Finest who have given their own lives so that the rest of us may live in peace and safety," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a news release. "The greatness of our city is reflected in these names, and they tell the story of New York: its struggles and victories, and its transformation from a capital of violence and crime to the safest big city in America."
The Police Memorial Wall was dedicated in October 1997 at Liberty Street and South End Avenue in Battery Park. It has a total of 780 names.
The officers' names were also added to the Wall of Heroes at One Police Plaza back in May.
